Larry Gagosian Gallery Wikipedia

Larry built his first gallery on La Brea Avenue in West Hollywood in 1978 and began exhibiting young Californians (Vija Celmins, Chris Burden) and new New Yorkers (Eric Fischl, Cindy Sherman, Jean-Michel Basquiat). That same year, he purchased a loft on West Broadway in New York, just across from the Leo Castelli Gallery. Castelli was the one who introduced Gagosian to Saatchi and Newhouse Jr.

In partnership with dealer Annina Nosei, he exhibited David Salle’s debut show in a loft at 421 West Broadway in his first New York appearance in 1979. Nosei and Gagosian organized a Jean-Michel Basquiat show in Los Angeles in 1982. Basquiat worked from the ground-floor exhibition and studio space Gagosian had erected under his Venice home on Market Street at the time.

In the early 1980s, Gagosian grew his business quickly by capitalizing on the potential of reselling pieces of art by well-known modern and contemporary painters, giving him the moniker “Go-Go. Gagosian began working with a stable of super collectors, including David Geffen, Newhouse, Saatchi, and David Ganek, after opening a Manhattan gallery in the mid-1980s on the ground level of artist Sandro Chia’s studio building at 521 West 23rd Street.
