Gary Chapman Biography

Gary Chapman is an American contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter and former television talk show host. He was the host of the weekly syndicated show CCM Countdown. In 1994, he received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for The Light Inside.

In the midst of 1996, The Nashville Network made an exciting announcement: Steven Curtis Chapman would be stepping in as the host of their nighttime chat program, Prime Time Country, taking over from Tom Wopat. The show, however, met its end in 1999. Undeterred, Chapman embarked on the creation of Muzik Mafia on CMT, leaving his mark in the world of music television. He also made multiple appearances as a songwriting coach on CMT’s Gone Country.

Chapman’s dedication to storytelling took him on a journey to Vietnam alongside John Rich and Big Kenny. Their mission was to document the compelling story of Niles Harris, a Vietnam veteran, resulting in the creation of the film “The 8th of November: A True Story of Pain and Honor.” It’s worth noting that Chapman wore multiple hats in this endeavor, serving as the creator, writer, director, and composer.

In his earlier career, Chapman’s songwriting talents shone through as T. G. Sheppard’s recording of his song “Finally” soared to the coveted No. 1 spot on the country music charts in 1982. His prowess didn’t go unnoticed, as he received a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association for Songwriter of the Year in 1981.

Fast forward to April 1996, and Chapman’s remarkable journey continued as he clinched the title of Male Vocalist of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards. His 1996 album, “Shelter,” yielded yet another No. 1 single, “Man After Your Own Heart.” This achievement was celebrated with a Dove Award for Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year, and the song found its place on the Dove Award-winning Special Event Album of the Year, “My Utmost for His Highest.”

Adding to his list of accolades, Chapman’s CD “Hymns From The Ryman,” featuring his performance alongside other talented artists, claimed the title of Country Album of the Year at the 1998 Dove Awards.

Chapman’s journey through marriage has seen its share of ups and downs. His first marriage brought him together with Amy Grant on June 19, 1982. This union was blessed with the joy of three children. Unfortunately, the path of their love took a turn, and in March 1999, Grant initiated divorce proceedings, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Their divorce was finalized in June of the same year.

Following the end of his first marriage, Chapman embarked on a new chapter in his love life. In July 2000, he exchanged vows with Jennifer Pittman, marking the beginning of a new marriage. However, this journey faced its challenges and, ultimately, the couple decided to part ways, finalizing their divorce in 2007.

Not one to give up on love, Chapman once again found himself saying “I do.” On December 22, 2008, he married Cassie Piersol, his third wife. Together, they embraced parenthood by adopting an infant girl named Eva in March 2014.

Beyond their personal lives, Chapman and his current wife, Cassie Piersol, are actively engaged in various charitable endeavors. Their hearts lead them to volunteer for a range of causes and organizations, including the Nashville Rescue Mission, Agape Animal Rescue, the T.J. Martell Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
