Johnson joined the BBC after graduating from university, where he worked as a reporter for BBC Radio Solent and BBC Radio Manchester. His first television appearance was as a sports journalist on BBC South’s news show South Today. During this time, he also worked as a relief presenter for Sally Taylor and for a number of other BBC Television outlets.
In 2002, he was named Royal Television Society Regional Sports Presenter of the Year, and he was nominated three more times. Johnson has also worked as a reporter for the BBC’s Match of the Day and Final Score shows.
He was a member of the Match of the Day reporting team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and he may be the only person who has read the BBC News and commented on Match of the Day on the same day. He has been a regular Sunday presenter on BBC Breakfast since 2012. He has also hosted the show on Fridays, Saturdays, and Bank Holidays.
