Kirk Franklin is an American choir director, gospel singer, dancer, songwriter, and author. He is famous for leading urban contemporary gospel choirs including The Family, God’s Property, and One Nation Crew (1NC). He has been branded the “Reigning King of Urban Gospel” by Variety and is one of the first entrants into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
Franklin, an enduring star in contemporary gospel music, rose to prominence in the early ’90s with the Texas-based choir, the Family. Their platinum-selling debut, “Kirk Franklin & the Family” in 1993, not only dominated the gospel charts but made waves on the R&B and pop charts. Franklin was raised by his aunt, Gertrude after being abandoned by her mother while still a young baby. Gertrude collected aluminum cans to raise funds for Kirk’s piano lessons, which he began at the age of four. He excelled at music, being able to read and compose music as well as perform by ear.
He attended Oscar Dean Wyatt High School, where he studied music with Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals. He continued to study under her instruction and eventually became the choir’s pianist.
