Vanita Gupta is an American civil rights attorney, currently serving as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights coalition. Gupta is the first woman to run the largest civil and human rights coalition in the United States.
Gupta assumed the role of Acting Assistant Attorney General and head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division on October 15, 2020. Throughout her tenure, the division undertook significant efforts across various areas, emphasizing the advancement of constitutional policing and criminal justice reform, prosecution of hate crimes and human trafficking, the promotion of disability rights, protection of LGBTQ rights, safeguarding voting rights, and combating discrimination in education, employment, housing, lending, and religious practices. Importantly, Gupta maintained an inclusive approach by engaging a diverse array of stakeholders in these endeavors.
Gupta’s term featured her involvement in prominent issues, including the appeals of the Texas and North Carolina voter ID cases, comprehensive investigations into the practices of police departments in Ferguson, Chicago, and Baltimore, challenges against North Carolina’s HB2 law and other transgender rights legal battles, enforcement of education, land use, hate crime, and other laws to combat religious discrimination and Islamophobia, issuance of statements of interest on bail and reforming destitute defense, and the authorship of letters addressed to state and local court judges and administrators concerning the unjust enforcement of fines and fees within the criminal justice system. Additionally, she contributed to the Administration’s report on solitary detention.
Before her role at the Justice Department, Gupta held the position of Deputy Legal Director and Director of the Center for Justice at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Her journey with the organization began in 2006 when she joined as a staff attorney. Gupta was instrumental in establishing and leading the Smart Justice Campaign, with a focus on ending mass incarceration while ensuring community safety.
Her legal career commenced as an attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, where she successfully spearheaded the review of wrongful drug convictions involving 38 individuals in Tulia, Texas. These individuals were subsequently granted pardons by Governor Rick Perry. During her tenure, she also negotiated a $6 million settlement on behalf of her clients and engaged in consultations with European civil society organizations dedicated to advancing the rights of the Roma community.
