Vanita Gupta is an American civil rights attorney, currently serving as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights coalition. Gupta is the first woman to run the largest civil and human rights coalition in the United States.

Gupta assumed the role of Acting Assistant Attorney General and head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division on October 15, 2020. Additionally, she contributed to the Administration’s report on solitary detention.

Before her role at the Justice Department, Gupta held the position of Deputy Legal Director and Director of the Center for Justice at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Her journey with the organization began in 2006 when she joined as a staff attorney. Gupta was instrumental in establishing and leading the Smart Justice Campaign, with a focus on ending mass incarceration while ensuring community safety.

Her legal career commenced as an attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, where she successfully spearheaded the review of wrongful drug convictions involving 38 individuals in Tulia, Texas. These individuals were subsequently granted pardons by Governor Rick Perry. During her tenure, she also negotiated a $6 million settlement on behalf of her clients and engaged in consultations with European civil society organizations dedicated to advancing the rights of the Roma community.
