Fady Qaddoura is Palestinian American politician Democrat from Indianapolis. In the general election of 2020, he won the right to represent Indiana’s 30th Senate district. As a result, Qaddoura was elected as the state’s first Arab Muslim legislator. Sen. John Ruckelshaus, a Republican, was his opponent in the race, and he won with 52.5% of the vote.
Qaddoura was born and brought up in Palestine,by his Palestinian father and mother. He traveled at the age of 19 in 1999 to study computer science in the USA. He majored in computer science at the University of New Orleans, where he also obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Qaddoura also has a master’s degree in nonprofit management and public administration from Rice University. His PhD in philosophy in philanthropy and public policy was earned at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he later attended. He and his family were made homeless by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and people from all walks of life frequently gave them food. Qaddoura was motivated by the encounter to relocate to Indiana in order to pursue a post-graduate degree and a second career in civics. At the University of Texas System and the University of New Orleans, he conducted scientific study.
Qaddoura experience working for the public sector in governments and the effects of the 2016 elections on the local level were two of the three key factors that motivated him to pursue his life’s goals. The third factor started in 2015 when the then-Gov. Syrian refugees were prohibited from entering Indiana, per Mike Pence.
With his victory over state Sen. John Ruckelshaus on November 3, 2020, Qaddoura made history by being the first Muslim to be elected to the Indiana Statehouse. In Senate District 30, which runs from northern Indianapolis to southern Hamilton County, he won with 52.5% of the vote to 47.5%, a margin of around 4,000 votes. The first day of Qaddoura term was November 4, 2020. He will be out of office on November 5, 2024. Although it wasn’t on his platform, Qaddoura said he was proud to be the first Muslim American elected to the Statehouse.
