“She ‘went up’ is the only way I can describe it – it was a spark and she screamed out for me. It was like those horrific birthday candles that you blow out and they come back. It was really fast. It was definitely life-changing for me.”

She  was born in London, to Eve Pollard and Barry Winkleman, who came from a Jewish family. Her father was a book publisher and her mother was the former editor of the Sunday Express.

Her parents separated while she was still very young, and went on to remarry her father to the children’s author Cindy Black and mother to a former editor of the Daily Express, Nicholas Lloyd.

Claudia went to the independent City of London School for Girls. Later, she joined the prestigious Murray Edwards College, Cambridge from where she completed her MA Hons in History of Art.

Her first major television appearance was on Central Weekend, a regional talk show, in 2001. Winkleman’s first regular TV job was hosting the BBC Three Entertainment update show Liquid News between 2002 and 2004, taking over from Christopher Price on the now-defunct BBC Choice.

Colin Paterson and later Paddy O’Connell shared the presentation duties with her. The program contained celebrity interviews. In 2003, Fame Academy named Winkleman to host a regular update show on BBC Three, in accordance with its second season.

In 2005, she did a celebrity version of the show called Comic Relief Does Fame Academy. Winkleman also co-hosted The House of Tiny Tearaways, a BBC Three reality TV show, in 2005. She also took over as presenter of Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two, a spin-off show by Strictly Come Dancing, from Justin Lee-Collins.

She co-presented Eurovision: Your Decision, the UK selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, this time with Eurovision veteran Terry Wogan. Winkleman and Kielty rekindled their friendship in March 2008, when the two co-hosted the final leg of Sport Relief 2008.

On 2 April 2013, Winkleman began presenting the BBC Two sewing competition The Great British Sewing Bee, until the show went off the air in 2016. Later in 2015, she appeared on The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz. In May 2015, she appeared on an episode of Watchdog on BBC One.

Winkleman co-hosted The Biggest Weekend on BBC Two and BBC Radio 2 in May 2018. She appeared in a television advert for Procter & Gamble’s Head & Shoulders Suprême luxury shampoos and conditioners for women in 2018.
