Kournikova received her first tennis racquet as a New Year’s gift in 1986, when she was five years old. Kournikova joined the Spartak Tennis Club in 1986, where she was coached by Larissa Preobrazhenskaya.

Kournikova began competing in junior tournaments at the age of eight in 1989, and by the following year, she was attracting the attention of tennis scouts all over the world. At the age of ten, she signed a management contract and relocated to Bradenton, Florida, to train at Nick Bollettieri’s renowned tennis academy.

She rose to prominence on the tennis scene after moving to the United States.  She won the European Championships and the Italian Open Junior tournament when she was 14 years old.

Kournikova rose to No. 8 in the world in 2000 despite never having won a singles title. She had more success in doubles, where she was a world No. 1 player at times. She won the Australian Grand Slam in 1999 and 2002, as well as the WTA Championships in 1999 and 2000.

Due to serious back and spinal problems, including a herniated disk, Kournikova retired from professional tennis in 2003.
