Andy Samberg Biography

Andy SamAndy Sambergberg is an American actor, comedian, musician, writer, and producer. He is a  member of The Lonely Island, a comedy music group, and was also a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012.

He portrayed  Jake Peralta on the Fox and then NBC police sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which he also created, from 2013 to 2021. In 2013, he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for his role on the show.

Samberg joined Saturday Night Live as a featured performer and writer in September 2005. Schaffer and Taccone both joined the show’s writing crew. Though his live sketch appearances were restricted in his first year, he performed in a number of pre-recorded sketches, including commercial parodies and other video parts.

Samberg studied experimental film. He rose to fame after creating his own comedic videos with his two buddies, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. When YouTube was founded in 2005, video streaming became significantly more popular.

In 2013, he was cast as Detective Jake Peralta in Fox’s (now NBC’s) police sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which premiered on September 17, 2013. In 2014, Samberg was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor Television Series Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of Peralta. On September 20, 2015, he presented the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Years later, on January 6, 2019, he co-hosted the 76th Golden Globe Awards with Sandra Oh. Samberg appeared in Sleater-“No Kinney’s Cities to Love” video alongside Fred Armisen, Elliot Page, and Norman Reedus.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 16, 2016, he and the Lonely Island played their 2009 song “I’m on a Boat” with classroom instruments as part of a recurrent feature.

Samberg was born in California. His mother, Marjorie “Margi” is a retired teacher who taught at John Muir Elementary School. His father Joe is a photographer.

Samberg found that his adopted mother, Marjorie, is the real daughter of an Italian Catholic father called Salvatore Maida, who came in 1925, and a German-Jewish refugee mother named Ellen Philipsborn, who arrived in the United States in 1938.

Samberg has two sisters, Johanna and Darrow. At the age of 5, he told his parents that he wanted to change his name to Andy. He is also a third cousin of US Senator, Tammy Baldwin.

In 1996, Samberg graduated from Berkeley High School, where he developed an interest in creative writing. He then spent two years in college at the University of California, Santa Cruz before moving to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated in 2000.
