Ananda Lewis is an American television host, former model, carpenter, and a social activist. She was an MTV veejay from the late 1990s until 2001, when she quit the network to host her own broadcast syndicated television chat show, The Ananda Lewis Show.

While a student at Howard University in 1993, Lewis was heavily featured in the hit R&B video “Baby, I’m Yours” by fellow HU alumni Shai, which was filmed on campus. She played vocalist Carl “Groove” Martin’s love interest.

Lewis has participated as a mentor with the organization Youth at Risk and at the Youth Leadership Institute during her college years. She was considering attending graduate school to get a master’s degree in education when she learned that auditions for the role of on-screen host of BET’s Teen Summit would be held.

She claims that the kids she worked with that summer were the ones who pushed her to attend to the auditions. While a student at Howard University in 1993, Lewis was heavily featured in the hit R&B video “Baby, I’m Yours” by fellow HU alumni Shai, which was filmed on campus. During this time, she also became a recognizable face at celebrity-attended events in and around New York City.

People magazine named Lewis one of the world’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in 2000. She decided to leave MTV in 2001 to launch her own talk program. The Ananda Lewis Show premiered on September 10, 2001, following extensive prior publicity in which Lewis was compared to Oprah Winfrey.

Lewis, an animal lover, has worked as a spokeswoman for the Humane Society and as co-host of the A&E television show America’s Top Dog. She has been known to routinely introduce interviewers to her two pet chihuahuas. She has also served as a spokeswoman for the nonprofit literacy organization Reading Is Fundamental.
