Zain Asher is a British-Nigerian news journalist working for CNN currently based in New York City. Currently, she anchors the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom. Moreover, she can be seen filling in on the network’s premier business programs on a regular basis.

Zain was born and brought up in Balham, London to her parents Arinze Ejiofor who is a doctor, and Obiajulu Ejiofor who is a pharmacist. He has an older brother called Chiwetel Ejiofor who is an actor right now.  Unfortunately, her father died in a car accident in 1988 in Nigeria while her brother survived with serious injuries. She graduated from Oxford University where she studied French and Spanish and graduated with a distinction in oral Spanish. In 2006, she earned an MS from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Asher is a New York-based anchor for CNN International. She presently hosts CNN Newsroom’s weekend edition and frequently guest-anchors on the network’s top business shows, including Quest Means Business, The Express, and First Move with Julia Chatterley.

Asher also serves as the host of CNN’s weekly business program about Africa, Marketplace Africa, which frequently conducts CEO and world leader interviews.

She oversaw CNN’s special coverage of the deaths of Fidel Castro, Muhammad Ali, and George Michael, and the global call to action #MyFreedomDay, which brought attention to modern-day enslavement around the world.
