Sofia Boutella Biography
Sofia Boutella is an Algerian actress, dancer, and model. She grew up in a fairly secular home that encouraged artistic expression and creativity. She was a member of the Vagabond Crew, who won Battle of the Year in 2006, as well as a spin-off group called “Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites.”
Growing up in Paris, Boutella was exposed to many different types of dance, including hip-hop and street dance, which she found appealing since they offered more “freedom” than the more regulated techniques of ballet and gymnastics.
She was a member of the Vagabond Crew, who won Battle of the Year in 2006, as well as a spin-off group called “Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites.” Her big break as a dancer occurred in 2007, when she was chosen for Jamie King’s choreography for Nike Women’s “Keep Up” ad, where she served as a role model of femininity and hip-hop.
This was a significant boost to her career, and it led to further work with celebrities such as Madonna on her Confessions Tour and Rihanna. She attributes her ability to learn English to her work with Madonna.
Boutella started working with renowned Spanish choreographer Blanca Li when she was 17 years old. She began her career as a dancer in films and television shows, as well as advertisements and concert tours.
She starred as Eva in the drama film StreetDance 2 (2012), the sequel to StreetDance 3D. (2010). After 12 years as a dancer, Boutella decided to pursue a career in acting in 2014. Initially, she avoided auditioning for starring roles on purpose, preferring to play supporting characters in order to learn from more seasoned actors.
Her first significant picture, Kingsman: The Secret Service, was released in 2015, launching her career as an actor. In October 2019, she appeared in episode 5 of Amazon Prime’s Modern Love’s first season. Boutella was cast in Zack Snyder’s sci-fi adventure thriller Rebel Moon for Netflix in November 2021.
