Her father, Harry is an educator and painter. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Howard University. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Speech Pathology from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science.

He works as a painter at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts where he developed a unique method and style of painting, combining traditional scratch art methodology with pan and wax pastels.

Shayna’s mother, Charlena is a retired professor. She earned a B.F.A. degree in drama and theater arts from Howard University. She went on to receive her M.A. degree in speech and hearing science in 1967, and her Ph.D. degree in speech and hearing science in 1971, both from The Ohio State University.

She began her teaching career in 1971 as an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Department of Communication Disorders. She was promoted to associate professor in 1978.

In 1983 she served as the Graduate Program Director in the Department of Communication Disorders for one year. The next year, she was appointed chair of the department. She was promoted to full professor in 1989 and was appointed dean of the Graduate School in 1994.

In 2001, Seymour assumed the position of interim provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs; and in 2004 she was appointed provost. In 2009, Seymour retired from the University of Massachusetts Amherst to serve as provost of Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She retired from Simmons in 2013.
