Burns made his PGA Tour debut as a pro at the Sanderson Farms Championship in 2017 October. After finishing T43, he competed in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open a week afterward and placed T20. His T10 finish at the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament gave him automatic spots in the first 12 Web.com Tour tournaments of the 2018 season.

In February 2018, he finished second in the Colombia Championship. Burns finished T7 in the Honda Classic, playing with Tiger Woods in the final round, earning him a spot in the Valspar Championship, where he ended T12.

Sam won his first professional tournament when he birdied each of the final three holes to beat Roberto Castro by one shot in the 2018 Savannah Golf Championship on the Web.com Tour.
