Ferguson began his career as a journalist as a news producer at WJSU-TV in Anniston, Alabama on October 21, 1987. He later became the morning weekend anchor and reporter. He then joined WBMG-TV, where he anchored weekend newscasts and reported during the week.

He took a break from television and joined his family’s cabinet-making business. That did not last long as he was hired as a weekend weathercaster at WVTM-TV a few months later. He later joined WSFA-TV in Montgomery where he forecasted the weather and co-hosted the local morning show. He was then promoted to the morning weather forecaster three years later.

Mickey now works as the lead weather forecaster for Good Day Alabama every weekday morning from 4 am.
