Michael Urie is an American actor. He is well known for starring as Marc St. James on the ABC dramedy television series Ugly Betty. In As the Curtain Rises, an original Broadway Audio Network podcast soap opera, he may be heard as Bobby Kerns.
As a young talent, Urie’s career ignited while he was still a student at Juilliard. He made his mark with the world premiere of “Love and Happiness” in 2001, a play where he portrayed a sixteen-year-old grappling with his mother’s boyfriend. Recognizing his outstanding performance, the Juilliard School honored him with the 2002 John Houseman Prize for Excellence in Classical Theatre.
Throughout his career, he excelled in classical theater, demonstrating his versatility in Shakespeare, Jacobean drama, and commedia dell’arte. His role in “WTC View” on both stage and screen was particularly memorable. He actively contributes to Plum Productions and assumes the role of casting director.
In 2006, he embraced the role of Marc St. James in the ABC dramedy “Ugly Betty,” initially cast as a guest star but later becoming a regular due to his chemistry with Vanessa Williams. His performance in the show earned him an Ewwy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2009, and he remained a part of the cast until the series concluded in 2010.
Urie’s talents extended to hosting, notably during the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike when he hosted TLC’s reality-based series “Miss America: Reality Check,” providing insights into the 2008 Miss America Pageant.
With a dedication to theater, Urie directed a celebrity-performed staging of Howard Ashman’s unproduced musical “Dreamstuff” in a special one-night event. His stage excellence continued with “The Temperamentals” and his Broadway debut in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” as Bud Frump.
In 2012, Urie launched his website for videoblogging and live chats, connecting with fans in a unique way. His film endeavors included the role of James in the movie adaptation of Wendy Mass’s children’s book “Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life.”
On the television front, he played a lead role in CBS’s series “Partners,” followed by a standout one-man show, “Buyer & Cellar,” earning him both a Clarence Derwent Award and a Drama Desk Award.
Notably, Urie ventured into hosting “Cocktails & Classics” on Logo TV, where he and celebrity panels indulged in classic movies and cocktails. In 2018, he graced Broadway as Arnold Beckoff in Harvey Fierstein’s “Torch Song” revival.
His television journey continued with a recurring role in the popular series “Younger” and a new sitcom project “Fun” alongside Becki Newton. Although the pilot didn’t go forward, it showcased his versatile talents.
In 2021, Urie delighted audiences in the Netflix Christmas romantic comedy “Single All the Way.” In 2023, he starred in the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” proving that his career remains as vibrant as ever.
