Meredith Vieira is an American news journalist and TV personality famous as the original moderator of the daytime chat show The View, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. She presently anchors the daily syndicated game program 25 Words or Less.

Meredith is the host of the daily syndicated game show 25 Words or Less. She first appeared on the program in the autumn of 2019. Contestants are paired with celebrities on the program, which is based on a board game. This is an attempt to predict a list of five words with a total of fewer than 25 words.

Vieira started her broadcasting career in 1975 as an afternoon drive news announcer for WORC radio in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the B. J. Dean Show. She started her television career as a local reporter and anchor at WJAR-TV in Providence before moving on to the newsroom at WCBS-TV in New York City, where she worked as an investigative reporter from 1979 to 1982.

From 1982 to 1984, she worked as a CBS correspondent in the Chicago bureau. Her presence there earned her national attention. Meredith went on to work as a journalist for national news magazine programs such as West 57th from 1985 to 1989 and 60 Minutes from 1989 to 1991. Meredith was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and reared in adjacent East Providence, the daughter of housewife Mary Elsie (Rosa) and medical practitioner Edwin Vieira, both first-generation Portuguese Americans. She is the youngest of four siblings, the other three being elder brothers.

Vieira’s grandparents were all from the Azores, three from Faial Island, one of the archipelago’s nine islands. In Portuguese, the surname Vieira means “scallop.” They moved to New England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, settling in and around Providence, Rhode Island. Vieira was reared in the Roman Catholic faith, although in recent interviews she has declared that she has “spirituality, not religion.”

Vieira graduated in 1971 from the Lincoln School, a Quaker all-girls branch of the Moses Brown School in Providence. In 1975, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University.
