Marco Perego is an Italian artist and former soccer player. He played professional soccer until he was 21 years old when he suffered a horrific leg injury that forced him to retire from soccer. He is best recognized as the wife of American actress and dancer, Zoe Saldana.
According to art critic and journalist Glenn O’Brien, Perego’s work is in the old Mediterranean tradition. He sticks to his Hellenistic origins. In 2007, he was featured on the cover of ‘The Guardian with his sculpture ‘The Only Good Rockstar Is a Dead Rockstar,’ which appears to have predicted the murder of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.
Perego’s work was shown in 2012 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Museo Tuscolano in Rome, Art Basel Miami, and Zurich’s Galerie Gmurzynska, among other prestigious art fairs. Three years later, he produced ‘Burn to Shine,’ a 25-minute short film composed of almost 2,500 drawings. Perego appreciated painting as a youngster, but soccer was his true love.
His major break into the art industry came through a mutual acquaintance to whom he sold his first work. Gilda Moratti, a member of New York’s prominent Moratti family, bought his first artwork. She was a friend’s sister who had come to see his paintings.
He requested candid comments from her and even mentioned that if she did not appreciate his work, he would try something different as a career. She finally bought one of his paintings. He steadily boosted his profession in the years that followed. His paintings began to sell for $15,000 to $30,000 per piece as he got established.
Perego has subsequently achieved international acclaim, with paintings fetching upwards of $30,000 apiece. In 2008, he designed the background for Dolce & Gabbana’s ‘Where Fashion Meets Art’ campaign.
