Dahlgren was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2019. She noticed a small dent that appeared on her right breast and decided to get it checked. In an interview aired on December 11, 2019,  Kristen shared her personal strife with breast cancer with Dr. Natalie Azar on the Today Show.

In a CNN news interview on 12, 2019 December, she stated how grateful she was that her reporting job landed her at the Mayo Clinic Minnesota learning about the disease. Kristen is undergoing chemotherapy and stated that mammograms are only 87% effective and are less sensitive in women like her with dense breast tissue when it comes to diagnosing the disease.
