Jim Nantz Biography

Jim Nantz is an American sportscaster, he has worked on telecasts of the  National Football League, NCAA Division men’s basketball, and also the NBA.  Nantz has anchored CBS Sports coverage of the Master’s Tournament since 1989.  Jim is to host the 2021 Super Bowl alongside Tony Romo.

Nantz’s career began in the early 1980s as a sportscaster at KHOU in Houston, Texas. He later worked as a weekend sports anchor at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City from 1982 to 1985, where he covered BYU football and Utah Jazz games alongside Hot Rod Hundley.

In 1985, Nantz joined CBS Sports. Initially, he served as a studio host for college football and basketball coverage and worked as an on-course reporter for PGA Tour golf. He also called NFL games on Westwood One from 1988 to 1990 before transitioning to television.

Since 1989, Nantz has been the anchor for CBS’ coverage of the Masters Tournament. He became the lead play-by-play announcer for the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball finals in 1990 after Brent Musburger’s departure. Throughout the years, he partnered with various analysts, including Billy Packer (1991-2008), Clark Kellogg (2009-2013), Steve Kerr (2010-2013), Greg Anthony (2013-2014), Bill Raftery, and Grant Hill for March Madness coverage.

In October 2022, Nantz announced his decision to step away from basketball coverage to spend more time with his family. Ian Eagle will replace him. Nantz is known for his signature opening phrase, “Hello, friends,” which he used as a way to connect with his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease.

His broadcasting style includes providing viewers with historical facts and statistics about athletes and situations as events unfold, enriching the viewing experience with insightful information.
