Haines started her journalism career as a college intern at the Atlanta Daily World. She later interned at the Los Angeles Times. She has worked for the Associated Press, The Washington Post, and the Orlando Sentinel.

She was named the Associated Press’s national writer on race, politics, and culture in 2017. Haines was named editor-at-large of the fledgling nonprofit news outlet The 19th* in 2020.

She left AP to join The 19th* as a co-founding member due to structural issues in political journalism that she felt would be better addressed by starting a news outlet.

After Benjamin Crump encouraged her to investigate the shooting of Breonna Taylor, she wrote a story about it in May. The article, which was co-published by The 19th* and The Washington Post, helped bring the case to national attention.

She was the first reporter to interview Kamala Harris after her historic nomination for Vice President was announced. From 2011 to 2015, Haines served on the board of directors of the National Association of Black Journalists.

She signed a deal with CAA in August 2020 and will begin working as an on-air analyst for MSNBC. In 2021, Haines signed a two-book deal with Simon & Schuster. The first, about Black women’s political roles, is set to be released in early 2022.
