Eric Topol Biography
Eric Topol is a well-known American medical journalist, cardiologist, and author who is also the founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, a professor of Molecular Medicine at The Scripps Research Institute, and a senior consultant at the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California.
While at Cleveland Clinic, he established the first dedicated cardiovascular gene bank in 1996. This effort resulted in numerous breakthroughs in the genetics of cardiovascular disease, including the identification of key genes linked to heart attacks. The American Heart Association named both thrombospondin variants and MEF2A deletion reports among the top ten advances in 2000 and 2004.
In 2005, he received a $17 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Specialized Centers of Clinically Oriented Research to study the genomics of heart attacks. The American College of Cardiology honored him with the Simon Dack Award and Lecture in 2005, and the European Society of Cardiology honored him with the Andreas Gruentzig Award and Lecture in 2004.
Topol has been a part of the wireless medicine movement since its inception. In 1999, he was the first physician to join the Medical Advisory Board of CardioNet, the first dedicated wireless medicine company that performs real-time remote, continuous electrocardiogram rhythm monitoring.
In 2007, he joined the Board of Directors of Sotera Wireless, which created the first continuous non-invasive blood pressure monitoring device that also records all vital signs. In 2008, he co-founded a new educational program, STSI Wireless Health Scholar, with Qualcomm and Scripps Health to train physicians in wireless medicine.
