Dustin Lance Black is an American screenwriter, film and television producer, director as well as an LGBT rights activist. He is a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights and the author of 8, a staged reenactment of the federal trial that resulted in California’s Proposition 8 being overturned by a federal court.

Black wrote and directed the romance film The Journey of Jared Price and the coming-of-age short film Something Close to Heaven in 2000. In 2001, he directed and starred in the documentary On the Bus, about six guys on a road trip through Nevada and an adventure at Burning Man. He was hired as the only Mormon writer on the HBO drama series Big Love, which follows a polygamous household.

He has written for all three seasons, starting as a staff writer in season one and progressing to executive story editor in season two before being elevated to co-producer in season three. Black appears as himself in the documentary film Hollywood to Dollywood (originally released in 2011).
