Wolf worked at Benton & Bowles as an advertising copywriter, making ads for Crest toothpaste, including the slogan “You can’t top Crest for battling cavities.” He is also credited with the National Airlines slogan “I’m Cheryl, fly me.”

Despite his success in copywriting, he was still writing screenplays in the hopes of a future in movies. At the time, he worked briefly on a script with Oliver Stone, who was a struggling screenwriter at the time.

After a few years, he moved to Los Angeles and had three screenplays produced; one of these films, Masquerade (1988), starring Rob Lowe and Meg Tilly, was well received. He began his television career as a staff writer on Hill Street Blues, where he was nominated for his first Emmy for the episode “What Are Friends For?” for which he was the sole writer.

Wolf became close friends with Tom Fontana, who was then writing for the series St. Elsewhere, which was made in the same building around the same time as Hill Street Blues. Wolf went from Hill Street Blues to Miami Vice, where he wrote and co-produced the third and fourth seasons.
