Daniel Mallory Ortberg is an American Novelist, Author, and Editor who co-founded the feminist-focused website named “The Toast” alongside Nicole Cliffe. He is the host of the Dear Prudence podcast and the creator of the Dear Prudence advice column in Slate Magazine.

Ortberg is the author of the critically acclaimed fiction novels Texts from Jane Eyre (2014) and The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror (both 2014). (2018). Daniel Mallory Ortberg was born in the United States on November 28, 1986.

Ortberg contributed to Gawker and The Hairpin, among other publications. He met Nicole Cliffe through this work, and they co-founded The Toast, a feminist general interest website, from July 2013 until July 2016. He was named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in the media category in 2015. On November 9, 2015, Slate announced that he would succeed Emily Yoffe as the editor of the magazine’s “Dear Prudence” advice column.

On Substack in 2017, he started Shatner Chatner, a paid e-mail newsletter. Lavery was given a $430,000 advance to write for Substack in 2021. In May 2021, he ceased publishing the advice column for Slate. One of his greatest influencers and motivation is Shirley Jackson who is also a renowned novelist.
