Bob Herbert is a well-known American journalist and commentator. Bob is also a former liberal op-ed columnist for The New York Times (1993 – 2011) and a fellow at Demos, a progressive think tank.

Bob began his career in journalism in 1970 as a reporter for The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey. In 1973 he became the publication’s night city editor. In 1976 he joined New York Daily News as a reporter and an editor. He later joined the network’s editorial board and became one of its columnists until 1985.

Bob was a founding panelist of Sunday Edition, a weekly discussion show that aired on the New York affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He also served as the host of the weekly current affairs show Hotline on New York public television.

In 1991 he joined the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) as a national correspondent for The Today Show, a morning news program, and the NBC Nightly News a position she held until 1993.

In 1993 he joined The New York Times as an op-ed columnist where he wrote about politics, urban affairs, and social trends until 2011. He later became a fellow at Demos, a progressive think tank. He also began writing for The American Prospect magazine.
