Ben Horowitz is an American businessman, investor, blogger as well as and author. He is well known for being one of the co-founders of Andreessen Horowitz, a hugely successful venture capital firm. He was previously the President and CEO of Opsware, a software firm he sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2007 for $1.6 billion.
He began his career as an engineer at Silicon Graphics in 1990. He joined Netscape in 1995 as a product manager and was later elevated to vice president of Netscape’s Directory and Security Product Line from 1997 to 1998. When AOL purchased Netscape in 1998, he became Vice President of AOL’s eCommerce Division.
In June 2002, Horowitz began transitioning Loudcloud into Opsware, an enterprise software business. He then became the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer for the duration of its existence.
Opsware’s stock began trading at $6 per share, dropped to $0.35 per share at its bottom, and eventually traded at $14.25 per share when it was sold to HP. Following the sale of Opsware, Horowitz worked for Hewlett-Packard for a year as Vice President and General Manager of HP Software, supervising 3,000 employees and $2.8 billion in annual revenue.
On July 6, 2009, Horowitz and Andreessen created Andreessen Horowitz to invest in and advise both early-stage startups and established high-tech growth firms. Within three years, Andreessen Horowitz grew from a $300 million capitalization to $2.7 billion under management across three funds.
