Andrew Neil Biography
Andrew is a Scottish journalist and broadcaster, he is the chairman of The Spectator. Neil was the editor of The Sunday Times from 1983 to 1994. He also presented on the BBC political programmes and was the chairman of GB News.
From 1983 to 1994, Neil was the editor of The Sunday Times. His appointment was contentious, with some claiming that Rupert Murdoch chose him over more experienced colleagues Hugo Young and Brian MacArthur.
Before being appointed editor, Neil warned Murdoch that The Sunday Times was locked in a 1960s time warp and needed to “throw off its collectivist mind-set to become the champion of a market-led revolution that will rock the British Establishment to its bones and reshape the economy and society.”
After the Soviet Union put SS-20s in Eastern Europe, the Sunday Times firmly supported the stationing of American cruise missiles at British sites, while criticizing the revitalized Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Despite Hugo Young’s opposition, Neil also penned editorials supporting the US invasion of Grenada because it would restore democracy there.
Neil responded to Young by stating that he wanted The Sunday Times’ editorial position to be “neo-Keynesian in economic policy, radical right in industrial policy, liberal on social issues, and European and Atlanticist in foreign policy.”

He was born on 21 May 1949 to Mary and James Neil in Paisley, Renfrewshire. His mother worked in cotton mills during the war, while his father headed the Cairo fire department during the war, worked as an electrician, and was a major in the Renfrewshire Territorial Army.
Neil studied at the University of Glasgow, where he edited the Glasgow University Guardian student newspaper and dabbled in student television. He was a member of the Dialectic Society and the Conservative Club, and he took part in inter-varsity debates at Glasgow University Union.
He was the Federation of Conservative Students’ chairman in 1971. He earned an MA in political economy and political science with honors in 1971.
