Bernier’s interest in meteorology began when he was four years old. He began his career in New Bedford radio as a weekend weather forecast to his hometown radio station, WBSM-AM. His first on-air position as a meteorologist was at  KGAN in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He later joined The Weather Channel when it was still a start-up. In 1985, he moved to Minneapolis where he worked at WWTC-AM Northwest Airlines (as a trans-Atlantic flight forecaster) and eventually KARE-TV, Minneapolis, where he worked with his wife, Sally during the weekday morning newscasts.

Bernier began working at WJW channel 8 in 1988, as the morning meteorologist until 2007, when he moved to the weekday evening meteorologist..
