He began his career at Saudi Hollandi Bank, becoming head of international brokerage before joining the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), where he was head of securities listings.
Between 2011 and 2015, Al-Rumayyan was CEO of Saudi Fransi Capital (SFC), the investment banking arm of Banque Saudi Fransi. From 2014 to 2015 he was on the board of directors of the Saudi Stock Exchange.

He also stated that PIF will borrow prudently to finance specific assets and would explore further collaborations such as those with Blackstone and SoftBank. He is a member of the boards of directors of SoftBank Group and Reliance Industries Ltd.
In the aftermath of the Saudi regime’s 2017 crackdown, Al-Rumayyan was involved in the transfer of assets to PIF. Al-Rumayyan transferred to the PIF 20 firms confiscated by the government. One of these firms was later accused of being utilized by Saudi operatives in the assassination of writer Jamal Khashoggi.
With an $11 billion credit facility established in September 2018, Al-Rumayyan declared PIF’s first move in incorporating loans and debt instruments into its long-term plan. The following month, he stated that the fund’s goal was to raise the number of overseas assets in its portfolio from 10% to 50% by 2030.
