Waldemar Januszczak Art Critic Wikipedia

Januszczak worked as an art critic — and then as the arts editor – for The Guardian. In 1990, he was named director of arts at Channel 4 television in the United Kingdom, and in 1992, he became art critic for The Sunday Times. The Press Association named him Critic of the Year twice.

Januszczak has been referred to as “a dedicated art admirer, critic, and writer His delivery style is informal yet intelligent, energetic, emotive, and hilarious. He bumbles around on our TV screens, doing for art what David Attenborough has done for the natural world,” and someone who acts out of “an unwillingness to depict art in any manner as elitist. He makes everything completely comprehensible and accessible.

In 1997, he participated in a Channel 4 debate titled The Death of Painting, which was prompted by the lack of painters from that year’s Turner Prize. The show became legendary because an allegedly inebriated Tracey Emin shouted at the other attendees and fled after 10 minutes.

When insurance salesman and art collector Ivan Massow slammed conceptual art in general, claiming that Emin couldn’t “think her way out of a paper bag,” Januszczak pointed out in a letter to The Independent that “thinking” wouldn’t be particularly useful under those circumstances.

On BBC Four, he began a four-part series The Dark Ages: An Age of Light on the art and architecture of the Dark Ages on November 27, 2012. He directed and narrated Handmade in Bolton on BBC Four in October 2019, a short documentary series starring Shaun Greenhalgh and presented by Janina Ramirez.
