Tom Werner is a well-known American businessman and tv producer. He is the chairman of both Liverpool Football Club and the Boston Red Sox, thanks to his stake in Fenway Sports Group.
Werner began his career in television in 1973, working for ABC-TV. He was named Director of East Coast Prime Time Development in 1975. In 1979, Werner was elevated to senior vice president of prime-time development. Werner was a part of the development of Mork & Mindy, Bosom Buddies, Soap, and Taxi while at ABC.
Werner departed the network in 1980, and the following year, he co-founded The Carsey-Werner Company with Marcy Carsey. He worked as an executive producer on shows like The Cosby Show, A Different World, Roseanne, 3rd Rock from the Sun, That 70s Show, and Grounded for Life during this time. Werner was elected into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1996.
In 2000, Werner, Carsey, and longtime partner Caryn Mandabach joined Oprah Winfrey to launch Oxygen, a 24-hour cable channel geared toward the “millennial woman’s” lifestyle and entertainment interests. The network was purchased by NBC Universal for $925 million in 2007, and it was redesigned as a multiplatform site in 2017 with a concentration on true-crime programs for women.
On June 14, 1990, Werner and 14 other Southern California-based businessmen purchased the San Diego Padres from McDonald’s heiress Joan Kroc for $75 million. He acted as the team’s general managing partner because he owned the most financial stake in the team.
Major League Baseball was riven by financial disparities between small- and large-market organizations during this time, and the 1994 World Series was eventually canceled due to a work stoppage that lasted into the next season. Werner was named to Major League Baseball’s Executive Council and served as the head of the league’s television negotiation committee, where he was a proponent of the wild-card concept, which was first used in 1995.
