Ted Koppel Nightline Wikipedia

Koppel rose to prominence as the host of the late-night news program Nightline. Beginning in early November 1979, the show began as a series of special reports about the 444-day Iran hostage crisis, during which Iranian extremists held 52 Americans hostage. Frank Reynolds hosted the program initially, which was titled The Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage.

The show became Nightline in March 1980, with Koppel as the host. In 1990, ABC News aired “The Best of Nightline with Ted Koppel,” a one-hour program. Koppel hosted the show for twenty-five years before departing ABC (and becoming the host of Nightline) in late November 2005.

Beginning in 1981, Koppel anchored a series of special programs called Viewpoint, which featured media critique and commentary while hosting Nightline. ABC News Vice President George Watson conceived the show as a way to confront any media bias that viewers might perceive they encountered on the network. It was broadcast in front of a live audience and allowed viewers to query how stories were reported or criticize television news. From 1981 through 1997, Viewpoint was transmitted on an intermittent basis.

Koppel announced his departure from Nightline on November 22, 2005, after 25 years on the show and 42 years at ABC.
