Munsch studied to be a Jesuit priest, but after working in orphanages and childcare centers, he realized he would rather deal with children. Tufts University awarded him a Master of Education in Child Studies in 1973. He traveled to Canada in 1975 to teach at the University of Guelph’s preschool in Guelph, Ontario.

He was also a lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Guelph’s College of Family and Consumer Studies. He was encouraged to publish the many stories he made up for the kids he worked with in Guelph.

It has subsequently sold over 30 million copies and has been included in the Friends episode “The One With the Cake,” as well as being cited by Oprah Winfrey on Late Night with David Letterman as her favorite children’s book. His second well-known book, The Paper Bag Princess, has sold over seven million copies and is regarded as both a feminist fable and a literary masterpiece.

Munsch is known for using exaggerated faces and acted voices in his storytelling. He fabricates his stories in front of an audience and refines them over time.

The characters in his stories are based on the youngsters to whom he originally read the story, including his own children. He frequently performs at children’s festivals and makes surprise visits to elementary schools. A Bunch of Munsch, a cartoon series based on his books, premiered in 1991.
