Suarez began working at New York University’s campus radio station shortly after enrolling as a student in 1974, eventually rising to become the station’s news director. He then went on to work for the university newspaper.

Thereafter, he worked as a freelance reporter in London and Rome, and his coverage of Pope John Paul II’s attempted murder earned him a job with CBS Radio in 1981. After that, he was employed by ABC and subsequently CNN.
