Cantlay began his golfing career while a student at UCLA. He won four tournaments in 2011 and received the Haskins Award as the best college golfer. Patrick was also named the Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

In addition to being the Pac-10 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, he received the Phil Mickelson Award as the GCAA National Freshman of the Year. Patrick earned a spot in the 2011 U.S. Open by qualifying through sectional qualifying. Along with Russell Henley and Brad Benjamin, he was one of three amateurs to reach the cut.

He was low amateur after rounds of 70 and 72 over the weekend. His back nine scores of 30 were the best in the event, and he tied for 21st place. He defeated Bryson Dechambeau in a sudden-death playoff to win the BMW Championship in August. He won the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, in September 2021. This win earned him the FedEx Cup and a $15 million season bonus.
