Who are the Nooran Sisters?

The Nooran Sisters are a Sufi musical group from India. The group consists of two sisters, Jyoti and Sultana Nooran. They were born into a family of musicians and began performing together at a young age. The sisters have released several albums and singles, and have toured internationally. They are known for their powerful vocal performances and their unique style of Sufi music.

The sistes were raised by their father, Ustad Gulshan Mir, grandson of famed Sufi singer Bibi Nooran and son of 1970s Sufi musician Swarn Nooran. Mir said that the family was struggling and that he provided music lessons to help them. Even a formal primary education was out of the question for the sisters.

Mir noticed Sultana and Jyoti Nooran’s potential when they were seven and five, respectively, while playing at home and singing a Bulleh Shah kalam they had learned from their grandmother, “Kulli vichon ni yaar lab lai.” Mir asked if they wanted to sing it with instruments. They sang in perfect time, accompanied by tabla and harmonium.

In 2005, the Nooran sisters made their debut television appearance on Doordarshan Punjabi program Jashan Di Raat. Jyoti appeared as a solo artist in the singing competition Nikki Awaz Punjab Di on Punjabi channel MH1 in 2007. In 2010, they were recognized by Iqbal Mahal, a Canadian music producer, who helped them play in front of a larger audience.

Their performance at the Baba Murad Shah Dargah in Nakodar in 2013 received much acclaim. They wowed Patiala, Punjab, India locals with their skill during the late Ghazal master, Jagjit Singh’s 72nd birthday celebration at Harpal Tiwana Center of Performing Arts (HTCPA).

Akshay Kumar’s 2015 film Singh is Bling included the song as a soundtrack. “Allah Hoo” became a YouTube smash when they sang it at MTV Unplugged and Coke Studio At MTV Season 2 later that year.

A five-song debut album, Yaar Gariban Da, was released on September 2nd, 2015, and was produced by MS Records. The song “Yaar Di Gali” from Channo Kamli Yaar Di won them the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer in Punjabi in 2017. During the Dhaka International Folk Fest in 2016 and 2017, they performed. In the 2019 film The Sky Is Pink, they teamed with MEMBA and EVAN GIIA on “For Aisha,” which was included in Ms. Marvel in 2022. Jyoti worked with composer D.
