Nina Arsenault Wikipedia

For 36 issues of fab, a biweekly Toronto-based LGBT magazine, Arsenault authored a regular piece on transgender topics. Her most recent piece was written in early 2007. She has starred in the TV shows Train 48 and KinK, as well as the Showtime film Soldier’s Girl.

Tommy Lee had a well-publicized experience with Arsenault, in which he flirted with her for a while before realizing that she was transsexual and fleeing in a hurry.

In November 2007, Arsenault starred in Ladylike, a one-act drama written particularly for her by Sky Gilbert. She also created and directed her own one-woman show, The Silicone Diaries, which toured throughout Canada to sold-out houses and critical acclaim, and was directed by Buddies in Bad Times Artistic Director Brendan Healy.

Arsenault also appeared in the episode “Manly Man” of The Jon Dore Television Show. She explained why she did not wish to have her current genitals removed: She was a member of the inaugural SummerWorks Live Art event in Toronto in 2012, performing for 40 Days and 40 Nights.

She spent 40 days in a spiritual experience for this performance, with the last 11 days available to the audience. She spent two hours a night beating herself on an exercise bike as part of this act. She has also performed For Every Time You Shattered Me I Made Myself Again, a six-hour performance in The Henry Moore Sculpture Room at The Art Gallery of Ontario in which she dressed, undressed, and washed herself with a variety of unspecified fluids in front of the audience, in which she appeared in a variety of different personas live and onscreen.

Arsenault resided inside an art gallery for six days in 2013 for a work called Lillex at London’s performance space. Arsenault collaborated with UK artist Poppy Jackson on rituals that explored feminine mythology and virtuality, including a trance-like dance that lasted up to six hours at a time.

She was repeatedly burned with cigarettes on her chest, neck, breasts, and occasionally above the genitals during these dances, yet she seemed unconcerned by the agony.

Her photographic and video collaborations with artists such as Bruce LaBruce, John Greyson, Jordan Tannahill, and Istvan Kantor have been exhibited at film and video festivals, academic and art journals, and galleries such as the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Pleasuredome, FADO, and New York University in Canada and around the world.

Arsenault has spoken at institutions across Canada and the United States, as well as at intellectual conferences such as Moses Znaimer’s Ideacity. She has also worked as a social activist with the Toronto Police Service, Mount Sinai Hospital, Women’s College Hospital, The Sherbourne Health Centre, Supporting Our Youth, and The 519 Church Street Community Centre, supporting the rights and dignity of trans people.
