Miriam Toews Wikipedia

While working as a freelance writer, Toews wrote her debut novel, Summer of My Amazing Luck (1996). The story follows two single mothers in a Winnipeg public housing development as their bond develops. Toews was working on a program about welfare mothers for CBC Radio when he came up with the idea for the novel. It was nominated for the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award and the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour. A Boy of Good Breeding, Toews’ second novel, earned the latter prize (1998).

Toews has contributed to CBC’s WireTap, Canadian Geographic, Geist, The Guardian, The New York Times Magazine, Intelligent Life, and Saturday Night Live, among other publications. She got the National Magazine Award Gold Medal for Humour in 1999.  She wrote The X Letters, a collection of intimate dispatches addressed to her son’s father that was broadcast on This American Life in an episode on missing parents.

A Complicated Kindness (2004), Toews’ third novel, is set in East Village, a small religious Mennonite community similar to her hometown of Steinbach. Nomi Nickel is the narrator, a curious, defiant, cynical sixteen-year-old who dreams of hanging out with Lou Reed in New York City’s’real’ East Village.

After the death of her older sister and the mysterious disappearance of her mother, she lives alone with her grumpy father. Nomi is a rebel by nature, unlike her father, who is a devout churchgoer, and her interrogation causes her to clash with the town’s various authorities, particularly Hans Rosenfeldt, the pompous church pastor.

The Flying Troutmans (2008) is a road trip novel told by 28-year-old Hattie, who takes care of her adolescent niece and nephew after her sister Min is taken to a mental institution. Hattie, overwhelmed by her responsibilities, devises an ill-advised scheme to track down the children’s long-lost father in California.

The novel won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize in 2008. “A love song to young people trying to navigate the volcanic realm of adult emotions,” the jury said. The novel was also designated a Globe and Mail Best Book and was longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction.
