Mimi Gardner Gates is an American art historian and a former director of the Seattle Art Museum. Se headed the Seattle Art Museum until 2009 when she retired. She got married to Bill Gates’s father Bill Gates Sr in 1996.
Gardner worked as an Asian art curator before becoming the director of the Yale University Art Gallery. At Yale, she helped shape the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) policy prohibiting the sale of artwork in a museum’s collection, even to finance operational costs. The museum has also constructed the Olympic Sculpture Park, which has displaced the Waterfront Streetcar’s maintenance barn and resulted in its permanent closure. The museum’s endowment had increased to more than $75 million by 2005, and the region’s first conservation studio had opened.
The museum found in 1999 that a Matisse painting in its collection had been plundered by Nazis and was now held by the relatives of French-Jewish art dealer Paul Rosenberg.
After Gates mediated an 11th-hour deal that resulted in the return of the artwork, the museum sued the gallery that had sold the painting in the 1950s. Porcelain Stories: From China to Europe, and Biblical Art and the Asian Imagination, are two books co-authored by Gates. In 2009, Gates retired from the Seattle Art Museum.
