In 2006, at the age of 18, he reached the National Golden Gloves finals with only five bouts, losing to Felix Stewart, and won the bronze medal at the Under-19 World Championships in Morocco, defeating Andrey Volkov of Russia and Pavel Kulda of Lithuania before losing in the semifinals to eventual winner Cristian Ciocan of Romania.
Hunter made his professional debut in March 2013, defeating Chad Davis by third-round TKO in a fight held in Phoenix, Arizona. On August 30, he scored another KO. Hunter, ranked #9 by the WBA, #10 by the IBF, #12 by the WBO, and #14 by the WBC at heavyweight, faced Sergey Kuzmin, ranked #5 by the WBA and #7 by the IBF, on September 13, 2019.
