Matt Hancock is an English politician currently serving as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since the year 2018. Matt previously served as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport in 2018, for six months.

Hancock resigned on Saturday (June 26th, 2021) when it was revealed that he violated official coronavirus regulations during an affair with a close aide, with former finance minister Sajid Javid taking over.

In a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the man in charge of Britain’s response to the epidemic, notably the countrywide vaccination rollout, resigned.

“We owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down as I have done by breaching the guidance,” he wrote.

“The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.”

After graduating from university, Hancock temporarily worked for his family’s computer software firm and for a Conservative backbencher before relocating to London to work as an economist at the Bank of England, focusing on the housing market.

In 2005, he joined the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne’s team as an economic consultant, subsequently becoming Osborne’s chief of staff. In January 2010, Hancock was chosen as the Conservative candidate for West Suffolk.

He nearly defeated Natalie Elphicke (solicitor and wife of politician Charlie Elphicke, who subsequently replaced her husband as MP for Dover) in the final ballot by 88 votes to 81.

At the 2010 general election, he was elected as the constituency’s MP with 24,312 votes, 13,050 more than Liberal Democrat candidate Belinda Brooks-Gordon.

Hancock was chosen to the Public Accounts Body in June, the select committee in charge of reviewing government spending to ensure it is effective and honest. He was a member of this committee till November of 2012.
