Lee Ufan Wikipedia

Lee spent his early years working as an art critic, philosopher, and artist. In Japan, he got involved in the countercultural upheavals of the 1960s Anpo Movement. In the late 1960s, he rose to attention as one of the founders and theoretical leaders of the avant-garde Mono-ha (School of Thing) group.

Mono-Ha has been associated with the 1960s Arte Povera movement, which was Japan’s first contemporary art movement to receive international prominence. The Mono-Ha school of thought opposed Western conceptions of representation, preferring to focus on material and perceptual interactions rather than expression or intervention.

Lee’s sculptures, which combine distributed stone configurations with industrial materials such as steel plates, rubber sheets, and glass panes, recast the discrete item as a network of interactions based on parity between the observer, materials, and place. Each piece in his sculptural series Relatum is made up of one or more light-colored spherical stones and black, rectangular iron plates.

Lee Ufan Exhibitions

Ufan was asked to participate in Documenta VI (1977) in Kassel by Manfred Schneckenburger after his first solo show in Japan in 1967, and he represented Korea at the Bienal de So Paulo in 1969 and 1973. His work was included in the Tate Liverpool exhibition “Working With Nature: Traditional Thought in Contemporary Art from Korea,” which was the first major survey of Korean art to be presented in the UK.

He had a solo show at the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1997, and a significant retrospective of his work was exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2001. Lee’s painting and sculpture were later included in major shows at the Yokohama Museum of Art in 2005 and the Musée d’art Moderne Saint-Etienne in France in 2005.

In 2019, Lee became the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s first single artist to take up the full plaza in the museum’s 44-year history. Lee Ufan: Open Dimension is a site-specific work that includes ten new sculptures that will occupy the museum’s plaza through September 13, 2020.

Lee’s work will be featured in the STARS: Six Contemporary Artists from Japan to the World exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, in 2020. The show will include one of Lee’s older pieces, “Relatum,” as well as the three-dimensional work, “Relatum – Dissonance,” and two large-scale new paintings, “Dialogue.”
