Katie Couric is an American television, online journalist, and producer. Katie Couric Media, a multimedia news and production firm, is her creation. Wake Up Call, her daily newsletter, is also published by her. She served as Yahoo’s Global News Anchor from 2013 to 2017. Couric has worked as a host for all three of America’s major television networks, and also began her career as an assignment editor for CNN.
Couric’s first employment was at the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C. in 1979, and he later became an assignment editor at CNN. She worked as a general-assignment reporter for the CBS station WTVJ in Miami, Florida, between 1984 and 1986. She reported for WRC-TV, an NBC-owned and operated station in Washington, D.C., for the next two years, earning an Associated Press award and an Emmy for her work.
In 1989, Couric began working for NBC News as a Deputy Pentagon Correspondent. Couric served as a fill-in anchor from 1989 until 1991. She replaced Bryant Gumbel as host of Today, Jane Pauley and Deborah Norville as co-anchors of Today, Boyd Matson, Garrick Utley, Mary Alice Williams, and Maria Shriver as co-hosts of Sunday Today, and Connie Chung, Bob Jamieson, John Palmer, Deborah Norville, Faith Daniels, Margaret Larson, and Ann Curry as anchors of NBC News at Sunrise. She also filled in as a news anchor on Today for Daniels, Norville, and John Palmer.
Couric joined Today as a national political correspondent in 1989, and when Norville went on maternity leave in February 1991, he became a substitute co-host. Norville did not return, and on April 5, 1991, Couric was named permanent co-anchor. In 1994, she joined Tom Brokaw as co-anchor of Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric, an evening time weekly TV newsmagazine that was eventually canceled and incorporated into Dateline NBC, where she continued to report and was named anchor.
Couric stood in for Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams on NBC Nightly News on occasion while at NBC. Couric also appeared on the Weekend Edition of NBC Nightly News from 1989 to 1993, filling in for Maria Shriver, Garrick Utley, and later Brian Williams and John Seigenthaler. She also hosted the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for 14 years, from 1991 to 2005, during her time on Today.
Couric announced her departure from Today on April 5, 2006. Later that day, CBS announced that Couric would take over as anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News. Couric would also appear on 60 Minutes and host CBS prime-time news specials.
While at CBS, Couric was paid $15 million a year, making her the highest-paid journalist in the world, comparable to Barbara Walters’ at ABC. On September 5, 2006, she made her maiden broadcast as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
