Joe Francis is an American entrepreneur as well as a film producer. He is also the inventor and pioneer of the Girls Gone Wild brand of entertainment. Before releasing the direct-to-video feature Banned from Television in 1998, Francis worked as a production assistant on the syndicated show Real TV.
Francis’ first business idea began while he was working as a production assistant for Real TV, a nationally syndicated reality television show that featured footage of remarkable events that were not generally reported in the mainstream media. He came up with the concept for Banned from Television there.
He began employing direct-response marketing, such as infomercials, to promote videos he had produced in 1997, and the Girls Gone Wild business was born. The videos featured college-aged women willingly exposing their bodies or acting erratically in front of the camera. Girls Gone Wild grossed more than $20 million in its first two years.
He had created 83 distinct Girls Gone Wild titles by 2002, and 30-minute infomercials were airing on all major US networks. In 2005, the company announced that it will give 100% of the proceeds from its Mardi Gras-themed DVDs to the Red Cross to aid Hurricane Katrina victims.
Officials at Panama City Beach, Florida sought to stop the filming of Girls Gone Wild in 2003, causing him to file a lawsuit against them for breaching his First Amendment rights. He was arrested for racketeering and released on bond by the same officials.
Riley Perez snuck into Francis’ home in 2004 and taped a humiliating blackmail video before arranging for payment so the video would not go viral. Francis was forced to disrobe in front of the camera while being held at gunpoint. Mafia criminals, according to Perez, asked him to do so.
