Crawford started his sports career in 1987 at WYMT-TV in Hazard, Kentucky. From 1998 until 2003, he worked as the local sports director for WFTS-TV in Tampa, FL. Prior to that, from 1993 to 1998, he worked in a similar capacity at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio.

From 1992 to 1993, he worked as a weekend sports anchor for WTIC-TV in Hartford, Connecticut. Crawford appeared in three minor league baseball games in 2005, divided between two independent organizations, the St. Paul Saints and the Long Beach Armada. He finished with a 2.25 ERA in his final start.

On May 21, it was announced on Twitter that Crawford will co-anchor SportsCenter in the noon to 3:00 PM Est slot with Chris Mckendry effective July 2012, replacing John Buccigross, who will shift to the 11:00 PM slot.

He presented some horse racing telecasts for ESPN in 2004. He was relieved from his position as Sportscenter 11 am-1 pm host on April 24, 2017, as part of a wave of layoffs that included over 100 ESPN workers.

Crawford became the 5 p.m. news anchor at Tegna-owned NBC affiliate WKYC in Cleveland when it started airing in January 2020. He joined the station’s lead meteorologist Betsy Kling as the 5 p.m. anchor for the new broadcast “What’s New.”
