In the summer after his graduation, Ian began his journalism career with CKDH in Amherst, Nova Scotia, followed by positions at CKCW in Moncton, New Brunswick, and CHNS in neighboring Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ian joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1986.
He worked for CBC in the Maritimes and Toronto, Ontario, before relocating to Vancouver, where he was assigned the role of a network reporter. He also hosted the now-defunct programs Pacific Rim Report, Foreign Assignment, a summer series on CBC Radio One, Feeling the Heat, as well as Times 7 (a joint venture with The New York Times).
Hanomansing was the co-host of CBC News: Vancouver, CBUT’s supper hour broadcast, from 2007 to 2010. He was the anchor of the national portion of the discontinued newscast Canada Now from 2000 to 2007. In 2010, he returned to his old job as a network reporter for The National, and from 2012 to 2017, he presented CBC News Now with Ian Hanomansing, which aired live on CBC Vancouver weeknights.
On August 1, 2017, he was announced as one of four new co-hosts of The National, CBC’s flagship newscast, with Adrienne Arsenault, Rosemary Barton, and Andrew Chang. In 2020, he was appointed as the program’s Friday and Sunday anchor.
