Edwards hosted the BBC’s coverage of major royal events, such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding and the funeral of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He took over as host of BBC election night coverage from David Dimbleby, and he was the lead presenter for the 2019 general election coverage on December 12 and 13.

Edwards worked briefly for the commercial radio station Swansea Sound before joining the BBC as a news trainee in 1984. He was appointed Parliamentary Correspondent for BBC Wales in 1986. Edwards hosted the BBC Six O’Clock News from May 1999 to January 2003. This was the most watched news program in the United Kingdom at the time.
