Dionne Warwick Wikipedia

In November 1962, Scepter Records issued her debut solo song, “Don’t Make Me Over,” the title of which Warwick came up with after snapping angrily at producers Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Warwick had discovered that “Make It Easy on Yourself,” a song for which she had recorded the original tape and intended to release as her debut single, had been offered to another artist, Jerry Butler.

Bacharach and David recorded their first top 40 pop success (No. 21) and a top 5 R&B smash with the line “don’t make me over. After “Don’t Make Me Over” became a smash in 1962, she followed her manager’s call, dropped out of school, and embarked on a tour of France, where reviewers dubbed her “Paris’ Black Pearl,” having been presented on stage at the Paris Olympia that year by Marlene Dietrich.

“This Empty Place” (with “B” side “Wishin’ and Hopin'” subsequently recorded by Dusty Springfield) and “Make The Music Play” reached briefly in the top 100 after “Don’t Make Me Over.” Her fourth record, “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” released in November 1963, was Warwick’s first top ten pop smash (No. 8) and an international million-seller.

Warwick had a more prosperous era from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, with a streak of gold-selling albums and Top 20 and Top 10 hit singles. In May 1966, Warwick had a top ten success with “Message to Michael,” a Bacharach-David composition that the team was positive was a “man’s song.

Her first RIAA Gold album, Here Where There Is Love, was released in January 1967 and includes “Alfie” as well as two 1966 singles, “Trains and Boats and Planes” and “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself. When music jockeys throughout the country began to play the album cut early in 1967, “Alfie” became a radio success.

Warwick presented infomercials for the Psychic Friends Network in the 1990s, which included self-described psychic Linda Georgian. From 1991 until 1998, the 900 number psychic service was in operation. According to press claims during the 1990s, the show was the most popular infomercial for several years, and Warwick made more than $3 million each year as the network’s ambassador.

In 1998, the network’s parent company, Inphomation, declared bankruptcy, and Warwick parted ways with the company.
