David Simon Wikipedia

Simon worked as a police reporter at The Baltimore Sun from 1982 until 1995 after graduating from college. The Baltimore Sun hired Simon for a column he wrote about Lefty Driesell, the men’s basketball coach at the University of Maryland at the time. Driesell was enraged that one of his players had been punished for sexual misbehavior, and he called the victim, threatening to ruin her name unless she dropped her accusation.

All of this occurred while the university administration listened in on the call but did nothing. Lefty Driesell was eventually signed to a 5-year contract and inducted into the ACC Hall of Fame in 2018.

Simon spent the majority of his career as a crime reporter. Simon loved journalism, according to a coworker, and considered it “God’s work.” Simon claims that he was initially altruistic, inspired to enter journalism by The Washington Post’s coverage of Watergate, but as he acquired experience, he became more realistic.

When the writing staff went on strike in 1987 over benefit cuts, Simon was a union captain. After the strike ended, he remained enraged and began to feel uneasy in the writing room. He looked for a cause to take a break and came up with the notion of writing a novel. “I left journalism because some jerks bought my newspaper and it ceased being exciting,” Simon explains.

Simon took a year off in 1988, disillusioned, to work in the Baltimore Police Department’s Homicide Unit and write a book.

Simon’s first book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, was written during his leave of absence from The Sun (1991). During 1988, he shadowed the Baltimore Police Department’s homicide section and wrote the book based on his observations.

“If someone simply wrote down what occurs in this place for a year, they’d have a goddamn book,” Det. Bill Lansey told him on Christmas Eve 1985 at the unit office, sparking the notion. Simon sought permission from the police department and the editors of the newspaper. The detectives were slow to accept him at first, but he persisted in his efforts to “appear… like part of the furniture.”

David Simon The Wire

David Simon, an author and former police reporter, created and primarily wrote the American crime drama television series The Wire. In the United States, the series was broadcast on HBO, a cable network. The Wire ran for five seasons, from June 2, 2002, to March 9, 2008, and featured 60 episodes. The show began as a police drama partially based on his writing partner Ed Burns’ experiences as a former homicide investigator and public school teacher.

The Wire is set and filmed in Baltimore, Maryland, and each season introduces a new institution and its ties to law enforcement, while keeping characters and storylines from prior seasons. The illegal drug trade, the port system, municipal government and bureaucracy, education and schools, and the print news medium are the five subjects, in chronological order. Simon chose Baltimore as the setting for the play since he is familiar with the city.

David Simon Homicide

Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets’ publishers were anxious for a cinematic version and approached a number of directors, but there was little enthusiasm. They should submit the book to Baltimore native and film director Barry Levinson, according to Simon.

Gail Mutrux, Levinson’s assistant, appreciated the book so much that she and Levinson became producers together. Simon served as a writer and producer on the award-winning television series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993–1999).
